Which cleanser should I use and why?Updated 3 days ago

A good skincare routine starts with a good cleanse. Cleansing is the foundation of healthy skin – it removes dirt, makeup and sunscreen whilst keeping your skin balanced and ready to absorb the products you apply next.

What is Double Cleansing?

For the most effective evening cleanse, we recommend double cleansing. This simply means washing your face twice with two different cleansers:

  1. First cleanse: Removes makeup, sunscreen and surface dirt
  2. Second cleanse: Actually cleanses your skin and prepares it for your other skincare products

The first cleanser breaks down stubborn makeup and sunscreen, whilst the second ensures your skin is properly clean and ready for the rest of your routine.

The Golden Rule: Start on Dry Skin

Always apply your first cleanser to completely dry skin – no water first! This is especially important with balms, oils or cream cleansers. When you add water too early, it stops the cleanser from properly breaking down makeup and sunscreen. Let the cleanser do its job first, then rinse with water.

Your second cleanser (usually a gel or foam) can be applied to damp skin as normal.

Which Cleansers Should I Choose?

Below are some tried-and-tested combinations based on your main skin concerns.

If you're concerned about fine lines and ageing

  • Step 1: Peptide Fix Melting Jelly Cleanser
  • Step 2: Vitamin C Fix Cleanser

Why this works: Peptides help keep skin firm and bouncy, whilst Vitamin C brightens and protects against damage. This combination cleanses whilst giving your skin anti-ageing benefits.

If you have spots, blackheads or oily skin

  • Step 1: Hyaluronic Fix Cleansing Cream
  • Step 2: Salicylic Fix Gel Cleanser

Why this works: The cream cleanser gently removes buildup without over-drying, whilst salicylic acid gets deep into pores to clear congestion and prevent breakouts.

If your skin looks dull, feels rough or appears uneven

  • Step 1: Ceramide Fix Cleansing Balm
  • Step 2: Glycolic Fix Cleanser

Why this works: Ceramides strengthen your skin's protective barrier, whilst glycolic acid gently removes dead skin cells to reveal brighter, smoother skin underneath.

If your skin is very dry, sensitive or easily irritated

  • Step 1: Ceramide Fix Cleansing Balm
  • Step 2: Ceramide Fix Base Build Moisture Milk

Why this works: This is the gentlest option, focusing on protecting and nourishing your skin barrier. The Moisture Milk is so gentle it can also be used as a morning cleanser when regular cleansing feels too harsh.

Simple Rules to Remember

  • Evening: Double cleanse to remove the day's buildup
  • Morning: One gentle cleanse is usually enough (your skin hasn't accumulated much overnight)
  • Listen to your skin: If it feels tight, dry or irritated, switch to something gentler
  • Seasonal adjustments: You might need richer cleansers in winter and lighter ones in summer
